In Spring of 2010 Blossom Life Projects demonstrated “The Power of One” with a Chiropractic Service Trip to Peru that included collaboration with Oakbrook Elementary School in Fairfield, CA. The results of that trip can be seen in video format at blossomlife.com by clicking on “Blossom Life Projects” and watching the “Peru 2010 Oakbrook Elementary Sticker Project Video”.
Now,….we are doing it again!
We are taking a very simple idea, which is very easy to execute, and doing our best to make a positive difference, as a team.
This time, Dr. Rhea Zimmerman is collaborating with Amelia Murray & Jenna Bleth. The story is simple:
When Dr. Rhea found out that her friend would be going to Bali with the desire to work in schools with children the lights went on: “let’s do the sticker project again!”. With two weeks to execute before the flight to Bali, the ladies pulled it together.
Amelia, now pregnant and living in Portland, jumped on board to contact Justine Turner Oakbrook, where she used to teach. Justine agreed, in the middle of their testing weeks, to let us come in and start the project (She has worked with us the year prior for the Peru sticker project). Amelia and Dr. Rhea collaborated to come up with a “lesson plan” to build on last year’s Peru lessons, and Jenna jumped into the classrooms to introduce the concept of “The Power of One” and to get the kids going on their sticker project!
This video is a preview of the stickers that the children created,……we will bring you the full story after we do our “follow up” at Oakbrook in June with school assemblies re-enforcing the “Power of One” idea along with the lesson (scroll down to read the lesson & The Power Of One explanation!).
Here is the simple lesson:
We are going to be involved in an exciting cross cultural service project in the next few weeks, and it is centered on the message, “The Power of One”. We want to see how just one small act of helping or kindness can brighten someone’s day and make a difference. You may remember the program from last year when we took the stickers to Peru. This year the group will be focusing on working with kids in Bali, and the theme is “Taking Care of the Earth and Its People”. We talk a lot about ways we can take care of the earth, but we want to focus more on ways in which we can help and take care of each other. For example: What are some nice things you can do for other people? How can one small act of kindness help someone? How do you feel when you do something nice for someone else? Brainstorm a list of ideas, then pick one that you feel you can illustrate on a sticker. And remember, have fun!
The lesson was introduced with a simple explanation of “The Power of One” idea. The idea, while universal, was simplified into a 3-Tier lesson that the children could grasp, and that remains religion & spirituality neutral so as to create real bridges amongst people of many walks of life.
Simply put, “The Power of One” as Dr. Rhea has been promoting and developing it is:
1. The power of one person giving their unique gifts to life. Everyone has them.
2. The power of a group coming together to do something bigger than they could do by themselves.
3. The power of living as if all of humanity is one big family.
As a collaboration between Dr. Rhea & Amelia representing “Blossom Life Projects” and Jenna with her unique gifts, mission & projects in Bali we are, in our best way, representing “The Power of One” as we work to spread this simple yet profound message to children and people of all walks of life. Each person, listening to their own innate drive and direction can come together, as whole inspired and empowered people, to create things that are much bigger than they would be if they had not created collaboration. We love that, and we are very thankful that Justine Turner at Oakbrook continues to embrace our simple idea and message!
