Mind/Body Science For Mental, Emotional, Physical & Spiritual Thriving

There is an incredible frontier of mind/body sciences that are looking at the relationship of our mental and emotional states and how they affect our body.  We now know that we can “rewire” our mental strategies and therefore change some of the ways that we interact with the world.  Interestingly, the strategies to benefit the body with these systems also end up creating more compassionate, patient, and, loving people.  This is of great significant interest to me as someone who wishes to see great change in the way we live with one another as a humanity, as well as in the way that we address ourselves as empowered people with powerful inner forces, rather than simply as victims of outer forces.

I also find it spiritually significant that our built in intelligence is actually more thriving and healthy when in these more connected states.  We are in the terrain where we are seeing that the connection of  healthy mind, body, and emotions lead to more spiritually connected and thriving states of being as well.

There is also a beautiful implication that I see where healthier people, meaning more compassionate and loving, would indicate a healthier planet due to this love, connection, and compassion stemming from and leading to mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health- collectively.  This is the direct way that I hope Breathe Love can be of contribution to humanity as a whole- as a tool to embody these discoveries for the positive.

I put together this brief explanation of some of these frontiers.  There are videos from some of the researchers themselves who discovered these areas.  Also see the post on “relaxation response” about Dr. Herbert Benson to learn about his incredible research.

Psychoneuroimmunology

“The mind is an intelligence that is located within every cell of the body.” -Candace Pert

There are biochemicals of emotion, called neuropeptides released during emotional states.  The relationship of these neuropeptides and how they interact with cells, and therefore gene expression, indicates that we have a mind-body, and that the mind is not separate from the body.  Also, stagnancy in emotion is a related response to lack of change of emotional states as well as potentially lack of motion- where we get frozen in a chemical “expectation” to keep feeding the same emotional states, or, put otherwise, emotional stories.  The more positive the emotional stories, the better the chemistry that follows will be for the body.

Neuroplasticity & Contemplative Neuroscience

Neuroplasticity shows that the brain is built to rebuild itself and that the intentional use of mental retraining strategies can create plastic changes in the brain changing our cognitive and emotional styles.  The study of how the brain can be transformed through the engagement with purely mental practice is contemplative neuroscience.

The mental/emotional states that they were measuring in this video that you will see here were states of meditative compassion.  In the experiment they are showing people who can practice this on their own.  I predict that with Breathe Love the practitioner could contemplate this successfully without extensive training- by following the instructions on using it as a a means to elicit relaxation response as taught on my website breathelovebelove.com.

Epigenetics

The new field that has showed that genetics as we “knew” it is incorrect.  Our genes do not determine our body’s function.  The genes turn on as a relationship to our environment, including, our mental and emotional ones.  As we change the chemical emotional environment within our body, we proactively affect the expression of genes in the body.  This is an emerging field with major research endeavors looking at the vast implications of this scientific discovery.  Here is a short talk by Bruce Lipton, who discovered epigenetics and has gone on to explore some of the potential that it implies.
